"Train Your Best Friend the Best Way "

Classes (Basic Obedience and Puppy Training)

KINDERGARTEN PUPPY TRAINING (KPT) -- This class is for puppies under six months. It consists of a supervised play period for socialization, followed by a quick “potty break”. This is followed by a discussion/question period covering various topics related to training and caring for young dogs. The end of the hour is devoted to teaching them simple obedience commands, expecting less precision than we would with older dogs. Puppy classes include all requirements for the AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy certificate. . (Attendance at a minimum of six weeks is necessary to receive the S.T.A.R. Puppy certificate.)

Classes require a minimum of 3 puppies. Please call for availability -- 727-595-4038.

BASIC OBEDIENCE -- This class is for dogs of any age over six months. It includes the “usual” obedience commands -- Heel, Sit, Down, Come, Stand, and Stay. Additional content includes such commands as “Leave it” and “Watch me”. Questions concerning problems of general interest will be addressed if requested. Students for the Basic class will be accepted the first week of the session only.

NOVICE/ADVANCED NOVICE --These classes are for those owners who want to continue learning with their dogs, whether for possible competition or just working with others who share their interests. They include more complicated exercises in heeling; longer, steadier stays; preparation for off-lead activities; and sometimes even games; and are intended to include more individual attention to particular goals.

DROP-IN CLASSES -- Since many people wish to continue to participate in the Advanced classes, after completing one regular seven week session of the Advanced classes, owners may pay for future classes and check off the classes only as they attend them.

But wait . . . there’s more !

Betty and Chris have prepared a different format for Basic obedience training for those people who can’t make it to evening classes. Interested? Here’s how it works.

The workshop will be a one-day session, from 9:00 am to approximately 4:00 pm. There will be breaks (with snacks) in mid-morning and mid-afternoon, and a lunch break. Lunch will not be included but there are several fast food places within a mile or so, or you may bring a lunch and eat in a pleasant gazebo. The instructors will be available over the breaks for questions or just “dog talk”.

Participation will be limited to 3-5 dogs, and with a minimum of two instructors there will be plenty of individual attention. In fact, if you choose, you can find a few friends with dogs and arrange a session with people and dogs you already know! The day of the workshop will be devoted to helping you with basic instruction to teach your dog to Heel (walk nicely on lead), Sit, Down, Come when called, and Stay. A few weeks later (on a date decided by the group) participants may return and take their dog through the Canine Good Citizen test (included in the workshop fee). During the interim weeks, you may call us with questions if you need to.

Because the Veterinary Center uses our training room during the day, the workshop and CGC test (description elsewhere on this site) will be held at Betty’s home a mile or so from the Center – large, shady fenced yard, plenty of parking, “facilities” available.

Sound like fun? Suit your schedule better than several evening classes? Call us for more information, possible date, or to schedule a "private" workshop with friends.
